Elder Head (Greyback)
Jparr3085 posted a topic in Masks, Dreds, Body Skins, Hands/Feet,
Greetings all!
I wanted to break down the process of how I created my elder predator bust/mask for anyone who was ever interested in trying to do something similar.
Ultimately, the idea stems from the creation of the original elder and how those talented artists at Stan Winston Studios brought the predator known as Greyback to life. Utilizing a head from the original predator film, they modified the mask by adding foam latex prosthetics to give the creature minor variations that set it apart from the Jungle Hunter as seen in P1.
I decided to do the same. Using one of my own P1 masks that I sculpted (the process of which can be read here...
https://www.thehunterslair.com/topic/2745-p1-jungle-hunter-mask/ ), I used foam clay to make new mandibles and a ton of little horns in various sizes. Once those were firm, I attached them to the mask. I then made a mixture of cabopatch (part prosaide/part fumed silicate) and applied that to the forehead to create a more pronounced, wrinkled texture than was found in my original sculpt.
Once that was dry, it was time to paint and bring the elder to life, liver spots, and all. Utilizing reference photos from Stan Winston Studios was the best route to see the colors and patterns on the original, along with some additional photos I found here on the Lair and elsewhere.
Once I was wrapping up completion of the painting, I began making the quills, dreads, and the numerous styles of beads that would adorn the dreads. In reality, that was one of the most time-consuming parts, I ended up sculpting and molding a lot of dread beads.
Then came the painting of each to look like various metals, bone, wood, and attaching leather, teeth, and all the other fun little things that would make even Jack Sparrow envious.
Fortunately for the long bead strands that dangle among the dreads, I just utilized store bought beads for those and strung various color combinations that resembled what the original sported.
And so that's how my Greyback mask/bust came to be. Hope you enjoyed it, and remember that if you're ever contemplating starting on your own build but holding back because you're unsure how it'll turn out or worry you'll mess up, stop fretting. Don't hesitate any longer. You're in one of the best places you can be for support and knowledge right here at The Hunter's Lair. There's a wealth of resources right at your fingertips and a whole community of fans who treasure this 'ugly mother fuc***' just as much as you, that'll be by your side every step of the way along your own costuming journey! 🤙-

Hello Hunters!!! Here is a quick step-by-step guide on how I painted this helmet. There are many ways to paint bios and this is just an alternative method to achieve the metallic look. I bought this bio a while back and it was on a shelf until now. This is how I received the bio and the copper color it came with. After washing and cleaning the bio with rubbing alcohol, I used a black satin primer. I added gold leaves mostly to the front of the bio ( I was using a SW photo as a reference for where the shinny parts were more noticeable ) If you never used gold leaf, don't be intimidated by it. Is very simple (just have a vac…

Here's a Huntorial I did back in 2007 when working on my second pair of Predator feet. It seemed to help a bunch of guys back then, so bringing it back here. In the early days of Predator costumers, the artists would sculpt feet you could wear like shoes, but in an effort to gain more height in our costumes, guys would have big Frankenstein sandal soles under those feet. Never looked movie accurate in the long run. So in talking to fellow member Ruffkintoy when he was to begin sculpting his own generic style feet, he sculpted them large enough INSIDE to hide platforming material. Leaving the traditional sized Predator sandal sole viewable from the outside, and not th…

Alright guys and gals, Here's another little tutorial on a process that sometimes gets overlooked when the excitement to slap some paint on a new latex predator mask or suit overcomes us. That's the prep work side of trimming and seaming that unsightly flashing that occurs during the molding process. That flashing forms where the individual parts of molds meet during the creation of the piece. Sometimes the piece will have the bare minimum and sometimes it'll be a little more noticeable. And what happens when you want a seamless and organic looking creature or piece? That's where trimming and patching those seams comes in. For this tutorial I…

Here's an easy way to make quick, cheap eyes for your predator busts/masks. Minus the bake time for the clay, these eyes were assembled in less than 15 minutes. Hope you enjoy it! You'll need: Sculpey oven bake clay (translucent) Glass cabochons Quick dry top coat nail polish Orange/red yarn Colored pupils printed out on paper I found that using the translucent Sculpey gave the eyes a nice color for the final product, but you can use any oven bake clay depending on what style of eyes you're going for. The possibilities are endless since you can change up the pupil color/size to fit whatever predator/creature you want. The same goes for t…

Brothers and sistas!!!..Ok here goes... I had this idea..😆 (reason I laugh is that usually means trouble for many).. Anyhow the idea was, what was the elder before he became the one we all know from P2?.. So I used my project manager skills I had to assemble one of the best build teams ever. It was me, sandy collora, David pea, Larry kidd, Scott Paige and a few others. I got a raw pull of the dead end suit I arraigned for sandy send the molds to david . David pea sculpted the headpiece and i worked with Larry to come up with they early greyback paint design... not many photos existed of its true color so we decided to go with a lighter tone grey. St…

I wanted to put together a quick tutorial on painting/weathering to show one method for bringing some realism to a fake skull. In this case it'll be how I made my Sergeant Mac Eliot trophy skull. With halloween around the corner, Skulls and bones will be plentiful and for those with access to a 3D printer there are always plenty of files available for free or to purchase online. For this specific trophy, I found a free skull on Thingiverse and printed that on a resin printer. Now Mac's trophy skull is famous for the plasma cannon hole and burn mark as seen in the reference photo here. So, first step was punching a hole into the skull. Fro…

Picked up two years ago a celtic-bio on fleabay. Cast was wrapped, eggshell-thin and edges brokken. I put some superglue inside and spend some time with this bio. Drilled a hole on the side and put plastic-piece from breathing mask on. Will replace the poor details on other site of this recasted bio soon. Stay tuned.

The plan for this stealth bio is to remove the fins and give it a custom paintjob similar to the picture below. The helmet is one of my favorite. Sculpted by Steve Wang. His style is very unique. This bio reminds me of the Guyver movies he worked on. This process has been done before. See link here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2189873577925294/permalink/3442282172684422 It may seem crazy to chop off the fins and tear into this helmet. The helmet came to me via FB marketplace, was a local sale. Before I met the guy he assured me the helmet was in perfect shape. When we met in person, the helmet had obvious damage to one of the large…

It was asked on Facebook. How do you start sculpting a bio helmet? I will attempt to put as much info in here as possible. First step is your idea and design, whether an original idea or copying a movie helmet, either way you will need reference pictures. Print them out, blow them up, multiple angles are useful. I put large printed images on hard poster board stock. Second, you will need clay and a sculpting base. A sculpting base is commonly referred to as an armature. Armatures are best when they are both sturdy and of the general shape of your end goal. For this discussion we will be talk about sculpting a helmet. So the best armatu…

Hi, im new to the forum, this is my latest attempt at a predator bust. Im still pretty early in the process, not sure yet whether to print it in 1/4 or 1/6 scale. For years my dream has been to sculpt the full lost tribe, at least in bust form, so I hope to finish him an a city hunter to start mixing them and making the tribe.

Alright, fellow Hunters... here we go again... I'm going to do a quick breakdown of how I painted and finished a Hez P1 bio helmet not too long ago. Now, this raw bio helmet I had sitting around for nearly 15 years, and for some reason or another, I kept putting it off. When I started assembling my Predator display wall, I finally decided enough was enough, and it had to be painted. I first rigged up a quick tri laser from one of the molds I made. I bought some cheap 5mm LED light bulb holder sockets to fit into the tri laser and a bunch of pre-wired LEDs off Amazon in bulk. I already had toggle switches, heat shrink tubing, and 9V battery connectors. This…

A local friend commissioned me too make him a Boar Bio helmet. Now I've painted a shit ton of these the standard way. I have not seen anyone do a bone version. The circular turtle shell dome areas will be painted a dirty aged bone color. Also debating the lower jaw being bone color as well. Something similar to Beserker bio. These are the marked bone areas. Rest of the bio @Roninpred says should be a gun metal. Weathered and dirty. Also some talk of a dred mohawk reminiscent of a boar's razorcrest. I've got some boat tusks I snagged off Etsy. Anyone have ideas?

Here are some of the suits i've worked in the past. Many my own concept. I realized i like to work on custom projects. Not the same stuff we see now days (not offense to anyone, i just cannot difference who is who anymore lol) *The p2 statue holding the spear was a collaboration between Larry Kidd and I. I'll be uploading photos of the suits every week.

Hello, I have always wanted to make a Predator 2 costume ever since I first saw the movie in theatres back in 1991. Finding this awesome page full of great how to's and such has been really awesome. The amount of talent the members of The Hunter's Lair have is nothing short of astounding. With that being said, I have a question about creating a Predator costume in general. What does one do if they have basically zero sculpting talent? I only ask, because as I have been looking at the many how to forums on making the various parts of the Predator, the head, whole body, hands and feet. I have noticed that many speak of sculpting those pieces using clay. My e…
