NeoKazama posted a topic in Paint, Techniques and Weathering,
Here is a quick step-by-step guide on how I painted this helmet. There are many ways to paint bios and this is just an alternative method to achieve the metallic look.

Elder Head (Greyback)
Jparr3085 posted a topic in Masks, Dreds, Body Skins, Hands/Feet,
Greetings all!
I wanted to break down the process of how I created my elder predator bust/mask for anyone who was ever interested in trying to do something similar.
Ultimately, the idea stems from the creation of the original elder and how those talented artists at Stan Winston Studios brought the predator known as Greyback to life. Utilizing a head from the original predator film, they modified the mask by adding foam latex prosthetics to give the creature minor variations that set it apart from the Jungle Hunter as seen in P1.
I decided to do the same. Using one of my own P1 masks that I sculpted (the process of which can be read here...
https://www.thehunterslair.com/topic/2745-p1-jungle-hunter-mask/ ), I used foam clay to make new mandibles and a ton of little horns in various sizes. Once those were firm, I attached them to the mask. I then made a mixture of cabopatch (part prosaide/part fumed silicate) and applied that to the forehead to create a more pronounced, wrinkled texture than was found in my original sculpt.
Once that was dry, it was time to paint and bring the elder to life, liver spots, and all. Utilizing reference photos from Stan Winston Studios was the best route to see the colors and patterns on the original, along with some additional photos I found here on the Lair and elsewhere.
Once I was wrapping up completion of the painting, I began making the quills, dreads, and the numerous styles of beads that would adorn the dreads. In reality, that was one of the most time-consuming parts, I ended up sculpting and molding a lot of dread beads.
Then came the painting of each to look like various metals, bone, wood, and attaching leather, teeth, and all the other fun little things that would make even Jack Sparrow envious.
Fortunately for the long bead strands that dangle among the dreads, I just utilized store bought beads for those and strung various color combinations that resembled what the original sported.
And so that's how my Greyback mask/bust came to be. Hope you enjoyed it, and remember that if you're ever contemplating starting on your own build but holding back because you're unsure how it'll turn out or worry you'll mess up, stop fretting. Don't hesitate any longer. You're in one of the best places you can be for support and knowledge right here at The Hunter's Lair. There's a wealth of resources right at your fingertips and a whole community of fans who treasure this 'ugly mother fuc***' just as much as you, that'll be by your side every step of the way along your own costuming journey! 🤙-

Alright, fellow Hunters... here we go again... I'm going to do a quick breakdown of how I painted and finished a Hez P1 bio helmet not too long ago. Now, this raw bio helmet I had sitting around for nearly 15 years, and for some reason or another, I kept putting it off. When I started assembling my Predator display wall, I finally decided enough was enough, and it had to be painted. I first rigged up a quick tri laser from one of the molds I made. I bought some cheap 5mm LED light bulb holder sockets to fit into the tri laser and a bunch of pre-wired LEDs off Amazon in bulk. I already had toggle switches, heat shrink tubing, and 9V battery connectors. This…

A local friend commissioned me too make him a Boar Bio helmet. Now I've painted a shit ton of these the standard way. I have not seen anyone do a bone version. The circular turtle shell dome areas will be painted a dirty aged bone color. Also debating the lower jaw being bone color as well. Something similar to Beserker bio. These are the marked bone areas. Rest of the bio @Roninpred says should be a gun metal. Weathered and dirty. Also some talk of a dred mohawk reminiscent of a boar's razorcrest. I've got some boat tusks I snagged off Etsy. Anyone have ideas?

Here are some of the suits i've worked in the past. Many my own concept. I realized i like to work on custom projects. Not the same stuff we see now days (not offense to anyone, i just cannot difference who is who anymore lol) *The p2 statue holding the spear was a collaboration between Larry Kidd and I. I'll be uploading photos of the suits every week.

Great article. Linked here. https://www.conancompletist.com/eatersofthedead/interviews/landon.htm Thank you to Conancompleteist.com for sharing this article! Check out their site for more Predator Articles. RICHARD LANDON (Creature Effects, Mechanical Department Unit) - How did you get involved in PREDATOR? - I had been working for Stan Winston Studio for just over three years when we got the job. I remember Stan showing up on the set of MONSTER SQUAD one evening, as we started a long night shoot. He had been drawing and meeting with the producers and already had his concept sketch in hand. The whole Stan Winston Studio…

Hello, I have always wanted to make a Predator 2 costume ever since I first saw the movie in theatres back in 1991. Finding this awesome page full of great how to's and such has been really awesome. The amount of talent the members of The Hunter's Lair have is nothing short of astounding. With that being said, I have a question about creating a Predator costume in general. What does one do if they have basically zero sculpting talent? I only ask, because as I have been looking at the many how to forums on making the various parts of the Predator, the head, whole body, hands and feet. I have noticed that many speak of sculpting those pieces using clay. My e…

Straight from Rob's amazing artwork. Doing my best to recreate his set of sketches into a real life helmet. This is my second time sculpting the helmet. First attempt failed when the clay dried out and cracked. About 10 years later I am taking another stab at it. Facts Monster clay medium Sculpted over a plaster bandaged foam block. Will be molded in silicone to make Resin copies. No idea what the paintwork will look like yet. Overall the goal was to blend a Japanese Oni mask with a Predator helmet. The challenging part has been to translate what a flat sketch is to a 3D object. The goal is to stay true to the original design. The antenna…

I bought this bio some years ago (I dont remember who/where from!) and have only just started work on it. Some of the details on it seem quite a bit different to most P1 Bios I've seen, mainly the laser module sticks out rather than being recessed, and the tube details on the opposite side also differ. The details on the whole bio seem a bit "soft" also. Does anyone know the origin of this bio?

Greetings all! I wanted to take a moment and actually put down the beginning to end process I went through recently over the course of a month and a half to create my P1 mask. Choosing to sculpt the head out of WED clay, I purchased a 25 lb bag (and toward the end a second 25 lb bag to make sure I had enough) and jumped right in. This was my first project on this scale so I scoured the Lair, other threads, message boards, videos, and anywhere else I could gather information to prepare for the task. I wanted the head to be as accurate to the original as I could, so I tried to find as many images as possible and was fortunate to have some members he…

Project Jungle Hunter is meant to be an old school Hunter's Lair build project. We are so fortunate to have this ultracal mold of the original predator. The mold having been made at Stan Winston's shop back in the day of an original head. Doesn't get any closer to the original than this. But he has no mandibles... Well that's where we come in. Let's rebuild it in whatever ways we want. Enjoy. This will be fun to follow.

So few have asked how I hang my Bio Helmets on the wall; Well here's a small tutorial on how I do it. Supplies can be bought a Home depot or Lowe's. Now the Insta-set I've purchased it on Amazon but I've also found it at Hobby Lobby and Warhammer shops. It's best to work on one side at a time Once everything is cured you can hang it up. I use decorative hanging hooks; they seem more sturdy. Few helmets I own have been hanging for Years done this way. Not recommended for HCG Helmets or Sideshow helmets <weight>

We all learn. Sometimes from others. Sometimes the hard way. Today I learned the hard way. I got this P1 with plans to make I a movie accurate version. Story goes as follows. 1. Months ago, primed it with Rust-Oleum automotive primer. Primer dried. But the primer cracked horrifically. Like a dry lake bed. I blamed my prep work and body filler. The cracking was frustrating so the project sat on the healing bench till this week. Wanted to get it on my wall. 2. Took the helmet off the shelf. Sanded ALL the cracking away. Got it smooth. Ready for paint. 3. Painted with the same primer. Got the sam…

Way back in 2000-2001 I sculpted my first Bio helmet. Humble beginnings. 🙂 We are start somewhere and I wanted to show my embarrassingly amateurish sculpture. Was sculpted over a home depot spray foam base. Used Roma Plastilina Clay. The basic idea was a segmented armor helmet that had a "samurai" vibe to it. I ended up getting silly with the paint. Blue and lots of dots. The reason I am putting it here is that the helmet was molded using Silicone Caulking tubes. They are cheap, readily available and can render a quick helmet. A good entry level practive project before you graduate to expensive silicones. The idea being. Make all your mistakes an…

Hello Hunters!!! I wanted to share my WIP of a statue for a client's collection. Since nowdays is hard to find the right parts, specially for a Mr. Black (no skins, chest or shoulder armor) i was pointed on the direction of Tony Ackerman and scored some armor from him. I am using p2 skins as a base, p1 head. I am using as inspiration not the Berserker suit how it was in the movie, but how it is now. At the KNB studio. If it still there... thought i saw it getting auctioned, anyways lol To the video. Regards Chris (inkfxtionstudios)

This project started with my acquiring a Silicone mold for sale. The mold was from a Brandon Croslin sculpture of a P1 bio. The sculpture appears to have lineage with George's fabled P1 Stunt bio. (P1 stunt - original helmet from the movie castings taken directly from the mold made by stan winston) I spoke with Brandon about the helmet and its origins. He stated the helmet was a sculpt from around 2012 or so, he sold a few and then sold the mold off to Julie Spehar. Julie has since sold it to me. The helmet is a very nice sculpt. Very symmetrical. The typical warped eyes and back fins have been corrected. The only downside to the bio was the surface w…
