I thought I'd share this project I did for my Pops last Christmas.

1944 WW2 Japanese Sword Display Frame

My pops is big on history and has always wanted to collect a few thing. One mainly a Original 1944 WW2 Japanese Sword.
So I searched high and low for this feaken thang! EBAY, Forums, and Trade Shows in the area. After 2 months of looking I came across one in North Carolina in an old antique shop. The sword was in Great shape. So I Bought it.

Well it needed something to display it. So I designed a frame that can support the sword.

before:

Me wrapping the casing. Not as easy as you think. I ended up buying a book on sword knots and wrapping.

Yes bed head.

After all that here it is.

Here is the Background Art I designed and made.

Putting it all Together .... Art with the support rings.

With the sword attached ... I designed to look like a Tachi Style Sword.

Hey thanks Guys!
Overall I was very pleased with the out come of it. So was my pops.

So if anyone is looking to wrap a weapon like a samurai sword let me know. There is a greap japanese book to pick up that steps you through it all. (no you don't need to be able to read japanese to do it.) From wrapping to knot tying. Great book to pick up. Don't know the name right off hand ... I'll post later tonight.

Honourable DBoyslade san... I'm very impressed. I know that the Japanese family will be greatful and very honoured when they know that you have given the katana of their of their grand-father a high and honourable place on the flag of their rising sun.

BTW it's great that you linked the katana with his the history on the background 2.

yo DBOYSLADE,

that's a REALLY cool looking display!
i've been studyin Kenjutsu for 19 years , never thought of doing a proper display & i might have to be cheeky & do something similar with one of mine! (traditional Samurai, not WW2 though)

Not to be picky in any way though & not meant to offend at all but A katana is displayed edge up, which comes from a samurai wearing his katana edge up and on his left side, so that he can draw his katana with his right hand and cut downwards. Besides, there will be no pressure on the cutting edge in this displaying way.

but many people do like to display swords either way & does look cool...

Thanks!

That's very true that they display it edge up.
But I noticed in the case of Tachi style swords they are usually hanging blade down because of the straps. (But I'm no sword expert and by no means offend)

My mean goal was to display it properly. So it all worked out in the end.

that's awesome dude!!! i'm very much a japanese sword fan, especially the really old good kitana... made by those badasses that fold the steal 2-3000 times (give or take?) masters they were....

very appropriate, and well made display, nice work! bigthumb.gif
